Timchenko started his career as an engineer in a chemical plant in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). In the 1990s, he became involved in the privatization of Russia's energy sector, and he co-founded the oil trading company Gunvor Group in 2000.

Under Timchenko's leadership, Gunvor Group became one of the largest oil trading companies in the world. In 2014, Timchenko sold his stake in the company and focused on his other business interests, including the Volga Group.
