Google Workers Discover Layoffs

In January 2023, Google conducted mass layoffs which were reportedly abrupt and left remaining employees in the dark about who had been let go. Some workers found out which of their colleagues had been laid off when they tried to send them emails and they bounced back. The company did not widely circulate information about who was laid off, and some workers only found out because their messages to them on internal channels didn't go through or because they saw their former colleagues' LinkedIn or Twitter posts. Remaining employees were discouraged from sharing information about the layoffs internally. Some affected US workers expressed frustration about losing access to documents and pictures saved on company devices and in emails, and being unable to say goodbye to or thank colleagues. The layoffs were described as "super disruptive" and have led to decreased motivation among remaining employees who do not know if their hard work will protect them from future cuts
